The One in Oxford

IHello all!

We are in the student metropolis that is Oxford. :) Having found our way to the venue we faffed around on Google for a while and realised that most of the takeaways were behind us. We missed our usual place and in the nick of time managed to find the website of this wonderful little place near the station. It's a restaurant and bar and had the largest collection of whiskeys behind the bar I have ever seen. I couldn't sample Amy of them as we're playing tonight, but they looked very, very impressive!

I ordered Yang Chow Fried Rice and hope I did the right thing. It's not always good to deviate from our norm, especially as the effect from the peppers from the other night are still being felt. As an establishment though I loved the atmosphere and wish we could have spent more time in the bar. Already I want to award 10/10, but it's the food that counts... So the result? Well, it was superb. The beef was tasty, the sauce was delicious, the prawns were succulent. But, there weren't any peas. So we awarded a great 9/10. I like peas that much. :) We need to get another gig in Oxford so we can come back and try another rice dish. It was very, very nice.

Hello all!

As usual, we're on the road and looking for food. Last night we ate dinner with a friend on the road and unfortunately it had peppers in it, so the other half has been struggling a bit. So it was nice that this special fried rice came with no soya. It was a good price, had lots of lovely peas. The sauce was very nice. In fact the whole thing was very nice indeed. The only problem was that I had eaten too much for lunch too late in the day and wasn't very hungry. I awarded a very fine 8/10.

Hello all!

On the road, as you probably guessed or I wouldn't be posting! We're in Kent today and have arrived nice and early so we can tuck into our usual dinner. We've ordered the usual, special fried rice, a tub of sweet and sour sauce, two forks and a receipt. No soy sauce in one, In May Mei they don't use soy sauce for the special fried rice, so that is a definite plus point for us. This is our second trip to this Chinese, the venue was pretty much next door last time, but it's moved. We still had to drive straight past it though. We have this dinner  8/10 last time, which is a definite we'll return score, so here we are. What will we give it this time?

I wolfed the dish down. The sweet and sour sauce was perfect, gloopy, sweet, perfect. I'm raising the score to 9/10.

EHello!

We're on the road and it's dinner time! I'm starving and the other half has gone off to fetch our usual takeaway. A fairly short journey here today, made longer by a 40 minute round trip back home to fetch a nyckelharpa for a student. Remembered just in the nick of time that I had to take it with me! We've been to this Chinese before, so I should see if we've blogged it before!

So the result? It was delicious and we both ate the lot. Prawn crackers were included and it was a good price. 9/10.

KHello!

We're in Uxbridge on a damp grey Thursday. It's the Thursday before Easter and the day that traditionally the devil met with all the witches in Sweden. Scary day!! Maybe at the gig tonight I should tell the Easter story! So the usual food was chosen. Special fried rice and sweet and sour sauce.

The result?

Really rather nice. Good peas, good prawns, nicely done rice and a perfect sweet and sour sauce. I troughed the lot.

9/10.

Hello,

Day two of our mini-tour. Today we're in Wrexham and found our way to the China Star. Because of all the allergies we always have to explain about the allergy to soya and try to get the restaurant to make a rice dish without any. There is usually confusion because we ask for two rice dishes, one normal and one without soya. It also doesn't help because some places don't use soya anyway so you're trying to get them to not use something they don't. One day we'll get it down to a fine art. Today I wasn't so eloquent and it took me a little while. 

The result?

It was ok. :) 7/10

Chop chip in Liverpool

Hello!

We're back on the road. :) Tonight we're playing in Liverpool, so we entered our usual search criteria into Google. The closest takeaway seemed to be Chop Chop. We drove straight past it and missed the tiny little shop. But having got out of the car we found the smallest takeaway. I stood there looking at the menu on the wall, it didn't look very familiar, we had navigated ourselves to a Korean takeaway. I managed to figure out what was closest to special fried rice. This ended up being plain rice with mixed salad and beef on the top with a separate chili sauce. 

The result? It was really really lovely. A wonderful refreshing bowl of rice with very tasty beef. The chili sauce was quite strong and added a nice kick to the rice.

My score? 9/10

Millennium Wok in Warwick

Hello!

We're in Warwick for the folk club this evening. We tried all three of our usual takeaways and all three were shut. So we decided to head on down to Tesco and make sandwiches. Low and behold there was a fourth Chinese takeaway and it was open. Hurrah!!

We do like to grab a takeaway. With Jonny's allergies it can be difficult on the road, so this is the best way forward - rice. It's quite surprising how few pubs do rice, it's all chips and tomatoes, neither of which are good. So it is rather a little ritual of finding a Chinese takeaway. You've probably gathered this by now from this blog. So I sit waiting and typing away on my phone wondering what we're going to grade the takeaway. What will it be today? Will this be our next takeaway of choice next time we're here?

The conclusion? Perfectly serviceable with a score of 6/10. We were so happy it was open and was very nice.

Hello!

Today we're in London. Colindale near Edgeware. We left home quite early to make sure we didn't have any problems on the M25. So of course we got to the venue really early. This meant we could find a very nice Chinese takeaway. We drove past a restaurant on the way in, so we headed back to it. As a restaurant it had some parking out the front and the food was put carefully into the little plastic tubs instead of rammed and tamped down. The usual special fried rice was ordered. The sweet and sour sauce was the perfect mix of tasty and not too runny. It was the perfect compliment to the rice, which had gorgeous prawns, succulent peas and a light garnishing of spring onion. I wasn't especially hungry, but I polished the lot off, it was that nice. We settled on a very good 9/10. I would have been tempted by a 10/10, but Jonny wasn't quite as effusive. This is a restaurant we'll definitely keep the postcode for! As a bonus there was a tesco express close by, so we could have a pudding of yoghurt. Yum.

And now, off to the gig.

We're on day five of a little five day tour and are now up in Kirkham near Preston. It rained all day and has been thoroughly miserable. After yesterday's glorious weather it was very wet and damp. We had aimed for a different takeaway just down the road, but it was due for some reason. In this place the special fried rice dishes were all with a sauce, so today's dish of choice is Young chow fried rice, one without soya, two forks and a receipt.

Having eaten too much bad on the road food at lunch and being a bit thirsty we were both not expecting the same wondrous meal as yesterday....

The result?

The meal itself was very nice. Good sauce, forks that were nice and robust (for scooping up rice anyway). It did the job and filled us up very nicely. So the score is a nice enough 8/10.

We've been on the road for a few years, but new phones lost passwords have meant I've not kept the blog up! Today sees me starting it up again. So for new readers of this blog I'll explain what it's all about. We're a pair of folkies who spend a lot of time on the road. My other half  has a lot of allergies and intolerances. Tomatoes, wheat, potatoes, soya, lentils just to start with. We've found that Chinese takeaway is safe to eat, as long as we ask for no soya sauce. It can be hit and miss, but at least there are no tomatoes, potatoes or wheat. So here I am sat waiting in the takeaway typing away on my smart phone ready to sample the delights of rice in a tub. Well it be nice? Will we end up with soya and the need for antacids later? Will I get the receipt? Will the fork be too bendy and snap? I've ordered our usual meal, two special fried rice (one with no soy sauce) and a receipt. Even after nearly four years, it's still the same usual!

The result?

Maybe we were very hungry, maybe sitting at a proper table with knives and forks or maybe the this was the perfect takeaway. We both instantly agree, 10 out of 10. On top of the perfectly fried rice was an eggy omelette style addition with some pork mixed in. The sweet and sour sauce was the perfect gloopiness and a lovely rich taste. All in all absolutely delicious!

A great way to start the Rice on the Road blog again.

We've not been to this club for a while, so we've not blogged this area yet. We used google to find the evenings food. A lovely looking restaurant with dry ice water features, very nice indeed. Hello!

We're in the middle of our seasonal work, most of which means we can eat at home or hit Ming Kee in Warwick. But tonight we've travelled over to Baldock for an extra special performance. This means that I ordered the food in full victorian costume. Did I get funny looks? Probably not as funny as in medieval hat, but funny looks none the less! So the usual was ordered. The result? A usual 8/10.

Ming Garden in Newport

Hello!

After a really, really early start on the Saturday morning and playing Christmas carols all day we were starving. We've been on the road for a couple of weeks now and we thought it was about time to go out and have a meal together. Our B&B was on a farm in the middle of no-where so we drove on down and into Newport and into the first chinese. Sweet and sour chicken Hong Kong style with rice. Chicken with ginger and pineapple. It was delicious! Maybe it was because we were in a restaurant or that we were hungry. But the food was delicious! It was expensive, but it always is when you sit in. The chairs were quite low and had a comedy moment of plonking further down than expected. So the score? 8/10. Only 8 because the food should have been wonderful and it was. Yum.

The Avenue in Southampton

Hello!

We're down in Southampton on our way from Salford down to the Isle of Wight. We were quite starving after our long drive. Tonight we had the luxury of ordering the food and taking it back up to our hotel room nearby. So we ate with proper seats and a table. I don't think this made the food taste better but it was very tastey indeed. Overall we gave a very respectible 8/10.

Aroma in Chadwell Heath

Hello!

It's the start of te Christmas season and we're out on the road for most of the month. Probably not too many entries as we'll be touring from the same place. We're starting our months extravaganza in Chadwell Heath in sunny old Romford. init man. ;)

The traffic was appalling, but it is essentially London. We took a little shortcut off the A12, but had to wait for cars to shuffle around and reverse backwards, vans to bail out over the grass verge and back to the dual carriageway before sitting in the queue again. All good fun though and reminds us why we live in the country. The usual was ordered, two house special fried rice, which didn't contain soy anyway. The takeaway is also a restaurant, with benches and tables. It looks like being a place where people congregate after the pubs kick out. People sitting and eating give me good hope of the food, but I am starving as I sit writing this!

A quick walk back to the car, parked in the pub, opened the huuge containers and tucked in.... Silence in the car.... Munch.... Munch... Munch. 

An amazing 10/10!!! Worth playing this club just for the food! Next time we play here or anywhere near here we'll be back!
